METAL STAMPS
Metal printing stamps were the first type of stamps made. They were almost always made of brass and the life of them lasted an extra 6-8 years longer than the rubber stamp. Wax was dripped on to the seal of the envelope then the stamp was used to make an imprint. The reason for this was to indicate if the envelope had been opened.

THEN CAME THE RUBBER STAMPS
The South Americans were the first to take notice of rubber and used it to tattoo or mark each other.
In 1770 rubber was given its name by a scientist called Sir Joseph Priestly, who discovered that the substance could delete lead from paper. Before this, breadcrumbs were used.
The first rubber stamp was made in 1866 by a man who carved a piece of rubber and mounted it on a block of wood then used it to stamp baths.
At the beginning of the stamping days they were mainly used to stamp manufactured products with words or phrases.
Stamp manufacturers started to appear as the demand for stamps became more & more.
In the 1990’s stamps became hugely popular. They were available to anyone and able to produce your own unique design.
